Listerine Toenail Fungus Cure Tips

By Dr.Eswararamanan VR

If you've been trying to find an easier way of dealing with podiatry problems, then the Listerine toenail fungus cure might be the answer to your prayers. Before we get into the pros and cons of using this method to treat your foot problems, you first need to know what caused the problem in the first place.

What is Toenail Fungus?

The problem is caused when fungus begins to grow beneath your toenail. Usually, this is caused either by damage to the nail which makes it easy for the fungus to get beneath it or by the wearing of wet or sweaty socks. Remember that fungus grows best in dark and damp conditions. Your socks and shoes can be the ideal environment, therefore, for its growth. Generally, toenail fungus isn't painful. However, it does cause your toenail to become discolored and thick.

How It Is Normally Treated?

Once you have this problem, most podiatrists will tell you the problem won't go away without drastic action. How drastic? Well, the recommended treatment is total removal of the infected nail. If you don't choose that option, you can use anti-fungal medications and apply them to the area. These medications are available over-the-counter and aren't expensive but they also won't cure your problem. Oral medications are rarely prescribed by physicians because they just don't work on toenail fungus very often and can cause serious side effects in patients.

What is the Listerine Cure?

We all know that Listerine is a powerful mouthwash. It was the first mouthwash to be sold commercially and actually began as an anesthetic thanks to the inclusion of menthol in the formula. Additionally, the product contains an antiseptic agent known as thymol. Thymol has also been shown in some studies to have anti-fungal properties, particularly when used on fingernails and toenails. Basically, the Listerine application involves making use of this thymol.

How does the Listerine Work?

Although different people have different recommendations, most suggest soaking your toenail in either 100% Listerine or in a combination of 50% Listerine and 50% vinegar. You should soak the nail for around 30 minutes daily. Dry the area well - remember you don't want to stick your wet toe back into a dark area immediately. Don't expect results right away. Fungal infections are hard to fight and require consistent treatment for months. Eventually, however, the thymol will succeed in stopping the growth of the fungus. At that point, you can cut the affected part of the toenail off with regular clippers and allow the healthy nail to re-grow in its place.

Preventing the Problem

Many people who need the Listerine toenail fungus cure have a hereditary predisposition to the development of the problem. Basically, if one or both of your parents had infected nails then you stand a good chance of following their example. To prevent the problem, always keep your socks dry and clean. Also, make sure your shoes allow good circulation. Using powder in your socks and keeping your nails healthy can also help.

    Toenail Fungus treatment?
I’ve injured my toenails while I was exercising/running, now 4 of my toenails look like they have fungi. I have been applying over the counter medication for past 3 months directly on the toenails, but the fungus is not diminishing. I do not want to take Lamisil, because of it’s potential damage to the liver. I have been soaking my feet in Listerine, because I’ve heard that it helps. Does anyone have any other recommendations?
PS. I keep my feet clean, fresh socks, new shoes, I try to keep my toenails open as much as possible, because fungi loves dark moist areas. So I am doing everything I can, I just do not see any improvement. Please HELP!!!!
How long will it take to get rid of this fungus?

    • Jenny P says:

As everyone has said it’ll take a long time for it to clear. The reason why over the counter medication doesn’t work as fast as we would like is because fungus unlike bacteria are actually more similar to our cells, and so the treatments to try and stop the fungus can hurt our cells greater than the treatments used for bacteria. Therefore it just takes a longer amount of time for the treatments to be effective. As was said though, continue your treatment, keep your feet dry, it’s just going to be a long road and amount of time before a difference will be seen.

If you had severe toenail fungus and got cured, please respond. Thank you!!?
I am a 33 yr old female who takes good care of herself, but suffers from a very embarrassing toenail fungus problem. I can’t remember a time I could wear sandals or go swimming without being terribly embarrassed – now I don’t show them anymore.

I’ve thought of toenail removal, but that is my last resort. When reading posts about people who got their cured with topical or/and oral medications, I always wonder how severe their fungus really was. I don’t usually see pictures – before and after.

What I am very interested in knowing is this – Are there any people at all who have had it so severe as mine and gotten it cured? And how?

I am attaching a couple of links to picture of my toenails for you to see. The toenails are clipped as short as possible. Any dark marks are from bleeding. The left big toe will bleed and hurts terribly if I cut it any further.

I am thinking of trying topical (listerine/vinegar soak daily), plus oregano oil topical treatment 2xs/day as well as taking oregano oil orally. But if there is no chance it will work because it’s so bad, then I don’t want to waste my time and money and just try to accept it. The thing is, I just can’t seem to accept it. I just want to be able to show my feet and not hide them for once in my life. I’ve tried topical solutions in the past to no avail. Lamisal concerns me because of the potential liver risks and expense.

Please – is there hope and especially if someone with my severity of condition has been cured, I would LOVE to hear from you!!

THANK YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART!!!

I’m sorry to hear about your problem, My boyfriend had some fungus on his toenail for a long while until I convinced him to coat it in (clear) nail polish and within a couple days it subsided. I’m not sure if that will be helpful to you or not but it could be worth a shot… Hope you get this cleared up, you deserve to be free of embarrassment when it comes to your body and self-esteem!

EDIT: I just looked at your pics and if it is any consolation, I don’t think there’s anything disgusting about your feet. I know we tend to judge ourselves a bit more harsh than others do, so it may not help when I say this, but I think you could paint them a pretty color that could cover up some of the discoloration and no one would even guess you had any sort of toe issues!
